The Importance of Standards

Standards are an essential part of doing business today - whether for products, services or management. In the context of public contracts and international trade, standards can help to simplify and clarify contractual relations. For example, the ISO 9000 series of quality management standards have been adopted by over 350,000 companies worldwide.

British Standards

British Standards are widely used in the Sultanate of Oman. There are now over 19,000 British Standards publications covering all industry sectors, with some 2,000 new or revised standards being issued each year to keep the technical content up-to-date and to encompass new materials, processes and technologies. All European Standards are automatically adopted as British Standards and a large proportion of published British Standards are also adoptions of International Standards. British Standards have an increasing role to play in Oman, particularly as government projects invariably require the use of internationally recognised standards. The British Embassy's Commercial Section in Muscat is now able to provide and process orders for British Standards as a service to the local business community. The British Embassy holds a fully searchable and up-to-date electronic catalogue of all British Standards publications. It also holds a complete set of British Standards publications on CD-ROM and is authorised to print and sell on site licensed copies of British Standards. Through this readily available service, the British Embassy's Commercial Section in Muscat is able to assist trade and industry throughout Oman to adopt universally accepted standards.
